Four O'Clock (Mirabilis Jalapa Red) - The Four O'Clock plant gets its name because the red, trumpet-like flowers open in the later afternoon. Easy-to-grow from Mirabilis Jalapa seeds, this shrub-like plant can reach 18 - 36 inches in height and nearly that in width. Four O'Clocks are hardy plants that prefer water and fertile soil; however, Mirabilis Jalapa is so adaptable in can grow in poor soil and with little water as well.

Four O'Clock plants are not hard to grow and even a black thumb will have success! Mirabilis Jalapa can be grown very easily from flower seed, but need to be provided with warm soil in order to germinate. They will germinate best between 65 - 75F in just 10 - 14 days if the flower seeds are kept moist. If directly planting outdoors, Four O'Clock flower seeds should be planted in late spring or early summer. In cooler areas with a late spring, start the Four O'Clock seeds indoors about eight weeks before the final frost date for transplanting outdoors at a later time.
