Golden Ball Open Pollinated Turnip has golden yellow flesh that is sweet, tender, and flavorful. Golden Ball produces a 3" to 4" diameter bulb that tastes more like a Rutabaga than a turnip. Enjoy perfectly shaped, golden turnips with fine grain and sweet flavor. Smooth yellow skin and yellow flesh never becomes woody. Pull at three to four inches for best quality. Ready in about 55 days, these turnips keep well.
Popular round variety with golden skin and flesh, fairly dwarf plants. Good storage qualities and nice, mild flavour.
Class:Root Vegetable
Nutritional Value: High in fibre.
Planting Instructions for Turnip Seeds
Sowing: Plant Golden Ball turnip seeds in cool weather - 3 weeks before final spring frost or after summer peak. Directly plant in well-tilled soil w/ full sun, 1/2" deep in rows spaced 12-18" apart. Thin them to 4-6" between plants for best growth.
Growing:
Help your garden thrive with natural moisture retention and pest control. Keep an eye out for the red and black harlequin bug, a common pest that can hinder your plants' growth. Act fast to avoid damage before it's too late.
Harvesting: For optimal flavor and tenderness, harvest turnip greens as soon as they reach a size of 1-3", while preserving the root for future growth. To store for longer periods, cut the top to 1/2" and store in a cool, dark place without washing off the dirt. Gardeners in warmer climates can mulch and leave the crop in the ground during winter for extended growth.
