You can grow Tom Thumb peas in flower pots, window boxes or in your garden. First available in the 1850s, Tom Thumb peas are an heirloom vegetable. This miniature plant is a dwarf pea variety that grows to a height of 12 inches, but produces full-sized pea pods. An heirloom variety is a nonhybrid plant, which means you can save the seeds to plant for next year.
1 Start planting Half Pint Pea Seeds (also known as Tom Thumb peas) in March for spring plantings, or in the second week of August for fall plantings.
2 Before sowing the seeds, prepare the top 4 inches of soil by using a shovel or hoe to loosen up clumps of dirt and remove any rocks or debris.
