Liatris spicata, also known as gayfeather, has long narrow leaves and produces spiky white flowers in summer. This perennial thrives in sunny, moist soil.
Liatris spicata is a sturdy and floriferous cultivar that is native to a wide range of habitats and can thrive in USDA Zones 4-9.
PLANT DESCRIPTION: Liatris spicata is a clumping perennial with green rigid stems and woody underground corms. Also known as LIATRIS Spicata, Butterfly Plant, and Flower Bulbs Perennial.Highly long and narrow grass-like foliage with small basal leaves that become smaller as the stalks rise. Topped by thick wand-like inflorescences of white florets that bloom for 3-4 weeks in early summer. Mature into fluffy golden brown achenes. Plants typically 2.5-3' tall with a 1' spread.

LANDSCAPE USES: This plant species thrives in sunny gardens and can be used for vertical accents, groupings, or mass plantings in various types of gardens. The beautiful blooms of Liatris spicata also make it a popular choice for cut flowers that last a long time. It is suitable for different garden styles and can attract wildlife.
CULTURAL & MAINTENANCE NEEDS: This particular cultivar, Liatris spicata, thrives in sunny areas with moist, humus-rich soil that is either sandy, clay, gravelly, or calcareous. It is also well-suited for hot, humid, and dry conditions. However, it is important to note that rabbits, deer, and livestock may graze on the foliage and stems, while meadow voles and prairie voles are known to particularly enjoy the corms. As such, it may be necessary to stake the plants in areas with rich soil, shade, or excessive moisture to prevent them from flopping.
This variety may self-sow. If this is an issue, deadhead after flowering before seed mature.
