This ornamental grass is ideal for erosion control, wetland restoration, and reinforcing stream banks. Its seeds are a highly sought after food source for small birds, making it a very attractive option for gardeners. Additionally, it can provide a beautiful addition to any landscape.-Chasmanthium latifolium
Northern Sea Oats is an attractive ornamental grass, with nodding seed heads that dance in the breeze. Its foliage and seeds turn red in autumn and bronze in winter, making it perfect for moist and partially shaded areas. Can also be used for dried flower arrangements.
This lovely woodland grass is treasured for its showy, drooping flowers and slender, bamboo-like foliage that changes from green to copper in the fall. One of the few native grasses that grows well in shade. You can plant it in the border, shade garden, naturalized areas, along streams or on the edge of a water garden. It also grows well in large containers and is one of the best grasses for cut flower arrangements. Excellent both as a specimen plant and in masses.
Uses: This plant is highly recommended for controlling erosion, restoring wetlands, and stabilizing stream banks. It is also in high demand as an ornamental grass, with its seeds being a favored food source for small birds.
Sowing: Plant the seeds by sowing directly into the soil either in late fall or early spring, ensuring that the soil is firmly compacted. To prepare for spring planting, combine the seeds with moist sand and refrigerate for 60 days before planting. It is important to maintain consistent soil saturation for successful germination.
Growing: Watering seedlings periodically until they are established is necessary for this plant. It thrives in moist soil and does not tolerate drought well. It has the ability to adapt to different types of soil, including sand and clay, as long as there is enough moisture. While it grows slowly, it can spread through self-seeding and may become invasive in ideal growing conditions. Dividing mature plants is also possible.
