Although of course not that uncommon in gardens, this beautiful flower is one of our rarest native wild flowers, now only known in two localities in Devon and Somerset. When they appear in early spring, the fragrant white flowers (with 6 equal, green-tipped petals) are most welcome.
Germination Instructions
Sow indoors at any time. Sow under glass or in a cold frame in autumn. Sow thinly into moist, well-drained seed compost. temp. 18-22°C for 2-4 weeks, then cold stratify. Move to -4°C-+4°C for 4-6 weeks then return to 5°C-12°C for germination. Germination should take 2-4 weeks from this point. If sown in a cold frame 2-3 months of natural winter cold should offer ideal conditions for germination to occur the following springas the weather warms. Allow seedlings to grow on for 1 year undisturbed. Pot up the small bulbs when dormant allowing 2-3 bulbs per pot. Grow on for another 2 years before planting out during the dormant period.
Growing Instructions
Prefers a moderately fertile, humus-rich, reliably moist soil in full sun.
Cultivation Instructions
Do not cut back leaves until they have completely dies down. Propagate via seed or divide offsets Sep-Oct.
