Sowing: Sow Swiss chard seeds in the garden one week after the final spring frost, ensuring they are 1/2" deep in compost-enriched soil and in full sun. To harvest the entire plant, space the plants 4-5" apart; for ongoing harvesting of the outer stalks, space them 8-10" apart for larger growth. For a continuous summer crop, sow more Swiss chard every two weeks. Germination should occur within about a week. Swiss chard is able to withstand light frosts and makes for a suitable fall crop.
Growing: Maintain consistent soil moisture and prevent weed growth by mulching the area. Moisture is vital for the seedlings' early stage of development.
Harvesting: Harvest young leaves at 6-8" or cut entire plant at soil surface, leaving 1" stem for regrowth. Outer stalks can be harvested separately, leaving heart for continued growth.
