A 19th-Century Heirloom That Still Sets the Standard for Crisp, Mild Radishes
White Icicle (Raphanus sativus) is a prized heirloom radish with a distinguished history dating to late 19th-century American seed catalogs — celebrated then and now for its slender, tapered form, brilliant paper-white skin, and clean, crisp bite. Especially popular in Japan, where long white radishes are a culinary staple, White Icicle grows to 5–6" long and just 1" in diameter. At its best when harvested young: mild, sweet, and beautifully crisp. Also excellent pickled and a superb keeper. Pure, organic, heirloom seed grown and hand-packed in the USA.

In the Kitchen
Enjoy White Icicle sliced raw in salads for a fresh, mildly spicy crunch. Exceptional for quick pickling with rice vinegar and a pinch of sugar. Pairs beautifully with sashimi as an edible garnish, or sliced thin on grain bowls and composed salads. Store unwashed in the fridge for up to a week.
Growing Guide
- Sow: Direct outdoors in early spring or early fall
- Depth: ½" below soil surface; 2" apart; rows 18" apart
- Thin later if sowing closer; radishes need room to form straight roots
- Soil: Loose, well-drained; aerate to 4" depth before sowing
- Rotation: Avoid planting near cabbage and broccoli; rotate site yearly to maintain soil health
- Seed saving: Allow seed heads to dry on plants; collect, clean, and store in cool, dry conditions
