Buds inflate like tiny balloons before popping open into elegant star-shaped blue flowers in late summer, making them irresistible to children and gardeners alike. The tuberous root (Doraji in Korean) is dried, fresh-pickled, or used in traditional side dishes and teas. Roots are used in traditional Chinese and Korean medicine for respiratory health, digestion, and inflammation. The root can be sliced and added to soups or stir-fries after light soaking.

Growing Guide

• Sow indoors: 6–8 weeks before last frost; do not cover seeds — light is required for germination
• Or direct sow outdoors after last frost; press lightly into soil surface
• Germination: 14–21 days at 65–70°F; keep moist; sow 4 seeds per plant spot
• Spacing: 10" apart; light: full sun to partial shade
• Soil: Well-drained, pH 5.8–6.8; drought-tolerant once established
• Note: One of the last perennials to emerge in spring — be patient; do not cut down foliage until after it turns gold in fall
