Bright White with Crimson Red and Crisp Green — A Bold, Starry Contrast
Cranberry Star is a stunning fancy-leaf caladium that earns its name with vivid, high-contrast foliage: bright white leaves with a thin green margin, crisp green veins, and bold red spots scattered across the surface like a constellation. Medium-sized and vigorous, it grows 12–24 inches tall and 18–24 inches wide, with large, elephant-ear-like leaves that make a dramatic impact in borders, mass plantings, and containers. An all-summer performer that thrives in heat and humidity.
Plant Highlights
- Leaf type: Fancy leaf — large, heart-shaped
- Colors: Bright white with thin green margin, crisp green veins, and red spots
- Height: 12–24 inches
- Spread: 18–24 inches
- Light: Shade to partial sun
- USDA Zones: 9+ (cold hardy to 20–30°F; lift tubers in fall in colder zones)
- Great for: Borders, mass planting, containers, landscaping
- Thrives in: Heat and humidity
How to Plant Caladium Bulbs
Plant tubers flat side down, eyes facing up, 2 inches deep and spaced appropriately for the spread. Wait until soil temperature reaches 65–70°F. For container plantings, de-eye tubers before planting to increase leaf count and uniformity. Cover with 1.5–2 inches of well-draining, organic-rich soil and water well.
Care Tips
- Soil: Moist, rich, well-draining; prefers organic-rich soil
- Water: Keep evenly moist; avoid waterlogged conditions
- Light: Shade to partial sun; some afternoon shade recommended in the hottest areas
- Fertilizer: Liquid fertilizer during the growing season encourages lush, full growth
- Winter storage: In zones below 9, dig tubers in fall and store in a cool, dry place until spring
Cranberry Star is excellent when used as a border plant or massed in shaded beds — its white and red contrast against lush green makes it one of the most eye-catching caladiums available.
