Grow the World’s Most Beloved Culinary Herb from Seed

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) is one of the most iconic culinary herbs in the world — a fragrant, evergreen perennial with needle-like leaves and a piney, resinous aroma that transforms roasted meats, pasta sauces, marinades, grilled chicken, and herb breads. Growing Rosemary from seed gives you an abundance of plants for the garden, containers, and kitchen year-round.

Why Grow Rosemary from Seed?

  • Essential Culinary Herb: Indispensable in Italian, Mediterranean, Caribbean jerk, and French cooking — exceptional with roasted meats, chicken, vegetables, and breads.
  • Deer, Drought & Pest Resistant: One of the toughest and most self-sufficient herbs available — thrives on minimal care once established.
  • Ornamental Evergreen: Purple-blue spring blooms attract beneficial pollinators. Compact shrub form (12–36 inches) is beautiful in borders, containers, and as a low hedge.
  • Container-Friendly: Bring pots indoors in winter in zones below 7 for year-round fresh herb access. Protect from temperatures below 30°F.
  • Economical Bulk Grows: Approximately 1,000 seeds covers 20 square feet.

Growing Guide

Sow seeds on the soil surface — do not cover, as light is required for germination. Start indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost, or direct sow outdoors when temperatures have warmed. Soak seeds before sowing to improve germination rates. Germination: 14–28 days at 65–85°F. Plant spacing: 12 inches (rows 18 inches apart). Full sun; well-drained soil at pH 6.6–7.8. USDA Zones 7–11.
