Known as the ambassador of spring, Crocus are often the first blooms of the spring. According to Greek mythology, crocuses sprung from the land where Greek gods Zeus and Hura lived as symbol of their love.
Originating in Crete, Crocuses were brought to Holland in the 16th century. The name means yellow saffron, as certain varieties of crocus are used to produce the spice saffron. Today, Dutch Crocuses are larger and more vibrantly colored than their saffron producing relatives.
âTuck these blooms into your flower beds or naturalize them into your lawn to enjoy in your garden. And if you live near wooded areas, these easy to grow bulbs are deer resistant. Crocuses are sure to bring you joy as springâs first blooms and a sign that your other blooms will soon follow.â
Crocus vernus Vanguard
This heirloom Crocus from 1934 has unusual and striking coloring-the outer petals are soft gray-blue, the inner ones light purple. When the flowers open on warm days in early spring, the contrasting colors create the illusion of bold stripes. Given the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit in 1983.
Crocus vernus are the familiar and welcome "giant" hybrid spring Crocuses. They are companions for very early Daffodils, and are most welcome planted in sweeps beneath and between shrubs in a border or foundation planting.
