Ramnad Mundu — also called Gundu Molzuka, meaning “fat chili” in Tamil — is a strikingly distinctive Indian heirloom pepper from the Ramnad region of Tamil Nadu. Its round, plump shape and yellowish-red color set it apart from all other Indian chili varieties. Despite its unusual appearance, the heat is on par with traditional Indian chillies. Seeds are harvested and grown each season in a pesticide-free garden, preserving the variety’s genetic integrity year after year.

Variety Details

  • Species: Capsicum annuum
  • Also Known As: Gundu Molzuka (Tamil: “fat chili”); Mundi Chilly
  • Origin: Ramnad region, Tamil Nadu, India
  • Pod Shape: Round, fat, plump — unlike typical Indian chillies
  • Pod Color: Yellowish-red at maturity
  • Heat Level: Hot — traditional Indian chili heat
  • Type: Open-pollinated heirloom, pesticide-free

Safety First

Always wear gloves when handling hot chillies. Wash hands thoroughly after removing gloves. Never touch eyes or sensitive areas. Lime juice may help relieve skin burn.

Starting Seeds

  • Sow ¼ inch deep indoors 8–10 weeks before last frost
  • Germination temperature: 80–85°F — heat mat recommended; 1–4 weeks to germinate
  • Use organic seed-starting mix; avoid jiffy peat pots or standard potting soil
  • Transplant outdoors after last frost when soil is consistently warm
  • Harden off over 7–14 days before outdoor placement

Growing Tips

  • Full sun; fertile, well-drained soil
  • Water 1 inch per week; mulch around base
  • Grows very well in containers (5-gallon pots or larger)
  • Save seeds each year: allow one pod to fully ripen, extract and dry seeds for two weeks, store in cool dry place
