Tasmanian Habanero Hot Pepper – Rare Variety, Organic

Capsicum chinense | Annual | 90–100 Days to Maturity

Named for the way its distinctive fruit shape echoes the silhouette of the island of Tasmania near Australia, the Tasmanian Habanero is a one-of-a-kind Capsicum chinense variety unlike any other habanero. Fruits measure approximately 5 cm wide by 7 cm long with medium-thick, slightly fragile walls and a bright, hot flavor that registers intensely on the palate and throat. Plants grow to a medium height of around 70 cm (28 inches) with a solid trunk, bushy crown, and attractive light green ovate leaves. A rare collector’s habanero with exceptional visual and culinary character.

Safe Handling

Always wear gloves when handling seeds and fruits. Wash hands thoroughly even after removing gloves. Avoid touching eyes or sensitive areas. Lime juice applied to burning skin is said to provide relief.

Soil & Water

Mix potting soil 3:1 with sand for excellent drainage. Plant in fertile, well-drained soil; target pH 6.0–6.8. Water consistently, keeping soil moist but never waterlogged. Insert a garden stake for stem support; tie loosely to the main stem as needed.

Planting & Growing Tips

  • Soak seeds overnight in warm water in an insulated container to speed germination.
  • Sow 2 seeds per peat starter pot; keep in a warm area (68–85°F / 20–29°C) until seedlings develop 4 leaves.
  • Fertilize weekly with ¼-strength chili plant food; transplant 4–6 weeks after sprouting.
  • Harden off in a sunny, warm indoor space (sunroom or greenhouse) before moving outdoors in summer; bring inside at night for the first week outdoors.
  • Gently shake the plant when in flower to encourage self-pollination.
  • Container growing: 5-gallon pots or larger; perennial in warm climates — overwinter indoors above 50°F (10°C).

Harvest Tips

  • Allow fruit to turn fully red before harvesting for peak heat and flavor. Always wear gloves.
  • Use garden scissors to cut cleanly from stems; pick regularly to encourage continued fruiting.
  • Exceptional for habanero-style hot sauces, Caribbean pepper sauces, and spice blends.
