Grow a distinctive plant associated with Caribbean and Southeast Asian food gardens: Turkey Berry (Solanum torvum), also known as Jamaican Susumber, Gully Bean, and Thai Pea Eggplant. This heat-loving shrub develops clusters of small green fruits and needs a long, warm growing season and room to establish.

What you receive

Choose 10, 30, or 100 seeds from the available pack options. This listing is for planting seeds, not live plants or harvested berries. Seed counts are approximate.

Plant details

  • Botanical name: Solanum torvum
  • Common names: Turkey berry, Jamaican Susumber, Gully Bean, Thai pea eggplant, Takokak, Sundaikkai
  • Growth habit: Vigorous tropical shrub
  • Climate: Warm conditions; sensitive to frost
  • Light: Full sun, approximately 6–8 hours daily
  • Soil: Fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost

Starting from seed

Start in a clean tray or small pots with fine seed-starting mix. Sow shallowly, cover lightly, and maintain even moisture without waterlogging. Keep the growing medium warm, around 72°F or above, and provide bright light.

Germination may be slow or uneven, so monitor moisture and allow extra time. In seasonal climates, begin indoors well ahead of suitable outdoor planting weather. A short growing season may not allow plants enough time to fruit.

Transplanting and care

Pot seedlings on when large enough to handle. Gradually acclimate indoor-grown plants to outdoor sun and wind before transplanting after frost risk has passed and temperatures are consistently warm.

Choose a permanent position with ample room for a shrub rather than spacing it like a compact vegetable. Water regularly during establishment and dry periods, allowing excess water to drain. Mulch lightly to conserve moisture, keeping mulch away from the stem. Feed according to the directions on a fertilizer suitable for vegetables.

Monitor for pests and support branches if needed. Plants and fruit production vary with climate, sowing date, and care; no fixed maturity date or yield is promised.

Traditional culinary context and precautions

Turkey berry is traditionally used in Jamaican dishes and Southeast Asian curries for its distinctive bitter flavor. However, traditional use does not mean every fruit or plant part is safe to eat. Solanum species can contain toxic glycoalkaloids, and cooking should not be assumed to eliminate them.

Do not eat raw berries or other plant parts. Before any culinary use, obtain reliable local food-safety guidance on identification, fruit selection, and preparation. Do not experiment with unfamiliar fruit or use this plant as a home remedy. Keep seeds and plant material away from children and pets. Seeds are supplied for planting, not direct consumption.

Growing responsibly

Turkey berry can spread aggressively in suitable climates. Check local restrictions and invasive-plant guidance before planting outdoors. Prevent unwanted seed dispersal and remove volunteer seedlings where appropriate.
