Variety details
- Variety: Little Marvel
- Species: Pisum sativum
- Type: English or shelling pea
- Growth: Compact plants that benefit from low support
- Pods: Green, approximately 3 inches long under suitable conditions

Shell the pods before eating. Little Marvel is not an edible-podded snow pea or snap pea. These garden peas are also different from ornamental sweet peas, which are not food crops.
When to sow
Direct sow during a suitable cool-season planting window. In many temperate gardens, spring sowing begins when soil is workable and well drained. Fall sowing can suit areas with enough time for flowering and pod development before damaging weather. Mild-winter regions may have different planting windows.
Light frost tolerance does not guarantee survival through severe freezes. Avoid planting in cold, saturated soil, where seeds can rot. Prolonged heat can shorten the harvest and reduce pod set.
Sowing guide
- Choose full sun and fertile, well-drained soil.
- Sow approximately 1–1 1/2 inches deep.
- Space seeds approximately 2–4 inches apart.
- Allow approximately 18–24 inches between rows, or enough room for support and easy picking.
- Water gently and maintain even moisture without waterlogging.
Emergence may take approximately 7–14 days in suitable conditions, but cool soil can slow it. Direct sowing usually avoids root disturbance from transplanting.
Soil and support
Prepare a loose seedbed and incorporate suitable compost where needed. Do not add limestone or wood ash automatically; adjust soil only according to its needs and a soil test.
Install a short trellis, pea netting, or brush support at sowing. Although compact, plants can lean or tangle as they develop. Support helps keep pods accessible and off damp soil.
A compatible pea inoculant may be useful where appropriate; follow its label instructions. It is not a substitute for suitable soil and growing conditions.
Growing care
- Maintain consistent root-zone moisture, especially during flowering and pod development.
- Water near soil level where practical rather than repeatedly wetting foliage.
- Mulch established plants to conserve moisture and limit weeds.
- Weed carefully to protect shallow roots.
- Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizer that favors leafy growth over pods.
- Inspect regularly for local pests, damaged foliage, and disease symptoms.
Plant height and productivity vary with conditions. Allow adequate airflow rather than assuming every plant will remain a particular height or produce a fixed yield.
Harvest timing
Approximately 63 days from sowing is a general planning reference under favorable conditions, not a guaranteed harvest date. Temperature, moisture, and plant establishment affect readiness.
Picking shelling peas
Pick when pods feel well filled but remain fresh and green. Open a sample pod to check that peas are tender before harvesting more. Do not wait for pods to yellow or dry if your goal is sweet, fresh peas; fully mature peas can become starchy.
Support the vine with one hand and detach pods gently with the other, or use clean snips. Pick regularly as pods reach readiness, without pulling on stems.
Kitchen use and storage
Shell soon after picking for the best eating quality. Refrigerate harvested pods promptly until preparation, then wash and shell before cooking. Add peas to soups, rice dishes, pasta, or simple vegetable sides.
For longer storage, follow a tested blanching and freezing method. If canning peas, use a tested pressure-canning process, not a boiling-water-only method. Discard moldy, slimy, or spoiled produce.
Seed storage and handling
Store unused seeds sealed in a cool, dry, dark place away from moisture and temperature extremes. Viability varies with age and storage conditions. The supplied seeds are for planting, not direct consumption, animal feed, or sprouting; follow any treatment information on the package.
