Tropaeolum lobbianum 'Yeti' is a rare and striking climbing nasturtium that produces a profusion of creamy white blossoms from midsummer through the first frost — an unusual color in a genus dominated by hot orange, red, and yellow. The tall vining stems reach 60–80 inches and will readily climb a trellis or fence, or meander with natural charm through shrubs and mixed plantings. Like all nasturtiums, every part of the plant is edible — the peppery leaves, the flowers, and the seeds — making Yeti a dual-purpose addition to kitchen and ornamental gardens alike. Easy and fast-growing from direct-sown seed.
Plant Highlights
- Rare creamy-white nasturtium — unusual and highly ornamental color
- Profuse bloomer: midsummer through the first frost
- Vining to 60–80 inches; excellent on trellises, fences, and through shrubs
- Fully edible: leaves, flowers, and seeds all have a pleasant peppery flavor
- Reputed companion plant — peppery foliage said to deter garden pests
- Deer resistant; attracts pollinators
- Approx. 8 seeds per gram — one of the largest flower seeds; great for children to grow
Growing Guide
Direct sowing (strongly recommended): Nasturtium seedlings do not transplant well. Soak seeds overnight in warm water to soften the coat, then plant ½ inch deep directly in the garden after frost danger has passed, in a spot that receives at least 6 hours of direct sun daily. Work the soil until fine and light before sowing. Germination in 7–10 days.
Site & soil: Full sun (afternoon shade in the hottest climates). Well-drained soil, pH 6.1–7.8. Tolerates most soil types.
Fertilizing: Deliberately lean — do not over-fertilize. Excess nitrogen produces lush foliage at the expense of flowers. Keep consistently watered but allow soil to dry slightly between waterings.
Support: Provide a trellis, netting, or fence for vertical climbing; or allow vines to ramble through evergreen shrubs for a naturalistic effect.
