AKA Canadian Ginger
Wild ginger, also known as Woodland Ginger, is a sturdy groundcover ideal for shady areas. Its splendid heart-shaped leaves and mauve-purple flowers make it a beautiful addition to any garden. This perennial herb, while aromatic like true ginger, is not commonly used for cooking and is mainly grown for its decorative foliage.
A popular groundcover for shaded woodlands, Wild Ginger grows up to 6 inches tall and has shiny, heart-shaped leaves. Its red flowers attract insects and it has multiple names, including Woodland Ginger and Indian Ginger. Originating in the US, it is a food source for the Pipevine swallowtail Butterfly and was used by Native American Indians and European settlers for seasoning and flavoring.
