Choose Your Seed Pack
Available in packs of 30, 100, 500, or 2,000 seeds. This listing is for seeds, not established plants. Seed-grown plants can vary in appearance, and plume color and production depend on maturity and growing conditions.
How to Start the Seeds
- Fill a seed tray with pre-moistened, well-draining seed-starting medium.
- Scatter the tiny seeds over the surface and press them in gently. Do not cover them with compost or soil; they need light to germinate.
- For more even sowing, mix the seeds with a small amount of fine sand before scattering.
- Keep the medium moist without waterlogging it, at approximately 72°F.
- Germination generally takes 1–2 weeks under suitable conditions. Allow approximately 5 seeds per intended plant.
- Move seedlings into larger pots as they develop, then gradually acclimate them to outdoor conditions before planting out.
Seeds may also be sown outdoors in spring after the danger of frost has passed. Prepare a fine seedbed, surface-sow, and keep the planting area moist during germination.
Planting and Care
Choose a sunny site with plenty of space for a large clump. Allow approximately 80 inches between plants. Water regularly through the first growing season to help plants establish; established pampas grass is more drought tolerant.
Use fertilizer according to the product label and your soil’s needs. Remove dead, brown foliage in late winter. Wear sturdy gloves, long sleeves, and eye protection when handling or pruning: the leaf edges are sharp.
Landscape Uses and Placement
Use pampas grass as a specimen plant or in roomy borders and screens. Place it away from paths and play areas where people may brush against its sharp foliage.
Regional suitability: Pampas grass can spread aggressively in some regions. Check local planting guidance and any restrictions before ordering or planting, and choose a different ornamental grass where it is discouraged.
