Lupinus succulentus â Arroyo Lupine, also known as Hollowleaf Annual Lupine or Succulent Lupine â is a California native wildflower that brings a burst of vivid purple to spring gardens and meadow plantings. Bushy, branching plants grow 12â24 inches tall with attractive star-shaped leaflet clusters and dense spikes of bright purple flowers. Like all lupines, Arroyo Lupine is a nitrogen-fixer â the name âlupineâ comes from the Latin lupus (wolf), reflecting an old folk belief that it stripped nutrients from soil; in reality, it does the opposite. An excellent choice for naturalizing, erosion control, and pollinator support in western gardens.

Growing Guide
Seed prep: Scarify seeds lightly with sandpaper or soak in 180°F water overnight to soften the hard seed coat and accelerate germination.
Direct sowing (recommended): Sow 1â2 weeks after the last average frost, œ inch deep in prepared soil. Keep lightly moist until germination.
Starting indoors: Sow 4â6 weeks before last frost. Use individual pulp pots â lupines do not tolerate root disturbance and pulp pots allow transplanting directly into the ground.
Spacing & thinning: Sow 3â4 seeds together, 12â15 inches apart; thin to the strongest plant at 2 inches tall.
Watering: Keep lightly moist until established. First season: 1 inch per week to build deep roots. Established plants are drought-adapted and need irrigation only during prolonged dry periods.
Cut flowers: Cut stems when lower flowers have just opened. Strip foliage below the waterline and place immediately in water.
