Size: 10 seeds

Calluna vulgaris — Scotch Heather — is a beautiful, low-growing evergreen perennial shrub blooming in shades of pink and red in late summer, with year-round foliage interest. Hardy in USDA Zones 3–9, heather thrives in full sun to partial shade in nutrient-poor, well-draining, acidic soils. Smaller varieties excel as ground covers and rock garden specimens; more upright forms make striking mass plantings on hillsides, in borders, and as background shrubs. Combines beautifully with dwarf conifers and deciduous shrubs for four-season interest. Height 12–20 inches.

Plant Highlights

  • Pink to red blooms in late summer through fall; year-round evergreen foliage interest
  • Thrives in nutrient-poor, acidic, well-draining soils — ideal for challenging sites
  • Excellent ground cover, rock garden plant, hillside massing, and border shrub
  • Combines well with dwarf conifers and deciduous shrubs
  • Hardy in USDA Zones 3–9
  • Height: 12–20 inches

Planting Guide

Soil: Nutrient-poor, well-draining, acidic soil required. Calluna will perform very poorly in alkaline soils. Do not over-enrich — lean soil is preferred.

Light: Full sun to partial shade; full sun preferred for best blooming.

Spacing: Plant approximately 24 inches apart in the garden.

Timing: Plant out in early fall or spring.

Winter care: Mulch before the onset of winter to protect from cold temperatures and wind damage.

Spring pruning: After winter, prune dead dry stems close to the ground in spring for fresher, more vigorous plants.

Sowing Guide

Heather seeds are very fine and must be surface sown — do not cover with soil. Press seeds firmly onto the surface and keep consistently moist; water from below when possible to avoid displacing seeds. Germination temperature: 55–70°F. Average germination time: 28–35 days. Light required for germination: yes.
