Crocus Bulbs - Ard Schenk are a variety of early flowering bulbs with pure white petals and a bronze base. This species typically produces multiple flowers per bulb and adds a beautiful shimmer to your winter garden when the sun shines. While smaller than their Dutch counterparts, these lovely crocuses make up for it with their impressive flower power.
Species Crocus
Crocus Bulbs - Ard Schenk are a species of white crocus that have been around since before the 18th century. They were originally found in Europe, North Africa, and western Asia. Known for being the first crocus to bloom, they often flower alongside Galanthus and Iris reticulata, or soon after. Don't be concerned about unexpected spring snow, as they typically bounce back without issue.
For earlier spring lawn tapestries, use Species Crocus - Ard Schenk. Blooms two weeks before Large Flowering siblings. Do not mow until foliage has died back (usually six weeks) for proper bulb multiplication and bulblet production.
Drifts of Species Crocus are also lovely along well-walked paths, in garden borders and in rock gardens. They have graceful six-petaled, 4" tall flowers that open and close on sunny days, and grass-like foliage that often has narrow, median silver stripes. Deer-resistant, they naturalize readily in well-draining soil and in full to partial sunlight. They may be a target for squirrels that may dig up newly planted bulbs for a snack, or to transplant elsewhere for surprise spring pop-up clusters. However, in the last decade or so, it’s been said that squirrels do not like varieties of Crocus tommassinianus. It’s worthwhile to give them a try if your garden is frequented by squirrels.
Planting: This variety is known to easily naturalize and is best planted in clusters for maximum impact. When planning a dense planting, a recommended amount is nine corms per square foot. To determine the necessary amount of corms, multiply the length and width of the planting site. For optimal growth and development, plant the bulbs 4" deep and 3-4" apart. The recommended bulb size is 5 cm/up and the optimal horticultural zone for blooming is 5. The bloom time for this species is typically late March to early April. This plant can thrive in horticultural zones 4-8 and can reach a height of 4".
Forcing Indoors : Crocus are also good for forcing indoors over the winter. Pot them up in mid-October and precool them at a consistent, dark 38°F to 45°F for eight to ten weeks with moderate weekly watering. Bring them into the house into progressively stronger sunlight. They will bloom about four weeks later.
