Medicinal Uses :
Root :Asparagus racemosus, a species of asparagus found in Sri Lanka, India, and the Himalayas, has multiple uses and is in high demand due to its medicinal properties. Its various names include Satavar, Shatavari, or Shatamull, and it has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine to treat ulcers, dyspepsia, and nervous disorders. However, due to destructive practices and habitat loss, this plant is now endangered in its natural habitat.
Growing Shatavari is a low-acidity plant (pH 6-6.7). If your climate is too cold, store the rhizomes and replant in the spring. Harvest is in the second year and beyond. For consumption, powder the tubers and take in the traditional Ayurvedic method or make into tea, capsules, or tinctures with alcohol and water. Contains sarsapogenin and glycosides.
Uses:
Shatavari is a key plant in traditional tropical and subtropical Indian medicine, mentioned in the Indian and British Pharmacopoeias and Ayurveda, Unani, and Siddha.
The roots are used in Ayurvedic medicine, following a regimen of processing and drying. It is generally used as a uterine tonic, as a galactogogue (to improve breast milk), in hyperacidity, and as a general health tonic.
