Sowing: Plant kidney beans in rich, well-drained soil in full sun 1 week after last frost. Use an inoculant for nitrogen fixation. Space seeds 1" deep, 3-6" apart, in rows 2' apart. Avoid over-watering to prevent rot. Germination occurs in 7-10 days. Best companions include carrots and beets, avoid onions.
Growing: After sprouting, it is important to maintain adequate soil moisture levels. Due to their shallow roots, these bush beans require watering at least once a week, especially in dry weather conditions. To conserve moisture and prevent weeds, it is recommended to mulch around the plants.
Harvesting: In case of frost or inclement weather, bring in the beans early and let them finish drying under shelter. To ensure proper drying, hang them roots up until the seeds become hard and the pods start to rattle. After 10-15 days, the beans should be completely dry. Then, manually remove the seeds from the pods or use a bag and heavy weight to thresh them.
