Barbados Hot Pepper – Bajan Habanero, Organically Grown

Capsicum chinense | Annual | 100 Days to Maturity | Origin: Barbados

Also known as the Bajan pepper, this authentic Caribbean habanero variety from Barbados is a prolific producer of small, wrinkled, very hot fruits that ripen through a gorgeous three-stage color progression from light green to orange to red. At 1¼ inches long by 1¼ inches wide, these compact pods carry the signature intense heat and fruity complexity of the Capsicum chinense species — beautifully suited for Bajan pepper sauce, Caribbean hot sauces, marinades, and jerk seasoning. Germination-tested seeds, grown organically in a pesticide-free environment.

Safe Handling

Always wear gloves when handling seeds and fruits. Wash hands thoroughly even after removing gloves. Avoid touching eyes or sensitive areas. Lime juice applied to burning skin is said to provide relief.

Soil & Water

Plant in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost; target pH 6.0–6.8. Water deeply with soaker hoses — 1 inch per week. Mulch 1–2 inches around the base for moisture retention. Apply compost tea every 2–3 weeks for the first 6 weeks after transplant.

Planting & Growing Tips

  • Start seeds indoors 10–12 weeks before the last expected frost; sow ¼ inch deep in organic seed-starting mix.
  • Maintain warm soil temperature; a seedling heat mat is essential. Germination: 2–4 weeks.
  • Harden off gradually; transplant outdoors once nights stay above 55°F (13°C).
  • Container growing: 5-gallon pots or larger; suitable for patios and year-round indoor growing in warm climates.
  • Avoid jiffy peat pots and standard potting soil; use organic seed-starting material only.

Harvest Tips

  • Harvest at full red maturity for peak heat and complex fruity flavor. Always wear gloves.
  • Use garden scissors to cut cleanly from stems; pick regularly to encourage continued production.
  • Exceptional for authentic Bajan pepper sauce, hot sauces, marinades, and Caribbean cooking.
