English Thyme Seeds

Grow a classic kitchen herb with warm, earthy flavor and a lightly minty note. English thyme (Thymus vulgaris) is a compact perennial suited to sunny herb gardens, borders and well-drained containers. Keep a plant near your kitchen garden for fresh sprigs to add to soups, roasted vegetables and savory dishes.

Plant highlights

  • Aromatic culinary herb with a low-growing, compact habit
  • Perennial where climate and growing conditions allow
  • Suitable for herb borders, rock gardens, raised beds and containers
  • Prefers full sun and well-drained soil

Starting from seed

Start indoors 6–8 weeks before your expected last frost using a clean seed-starting mix. Sow the tiny seeds shallowly and keep the surface gently moist, not saturated. Follow packet instructions for seed-lot-specific requirements. Germination is typically listed at 10–14 days, but timing can vary with temperature and moisture.

Provide bright light as seedlings develop. Gradually acclimate them to outdoor conditions before transplanting after frost danger has passed.

Growing and care

Choose a sunny site with good drainage. If growing in a container, use a pot with drainage holes and avoid leaving it standing in water. Water young plants as needed while they establish, then avoid prolonged wet soil and excessive watering.

Trim lightly to maintain a compact shape, avoiding heavy cuts into older woody stems. Winter survival depends on local temperatures and drainage; do not assume plants will return in every climate.

Harvesting and drying

Once plants are established and growing well, snip small sprigs as needed while leaving enough foliage for continued growth. Use the leaves fresh, or dry sprigs in a well-ventilated place. Strip dried leaves from the stems and store in an airtight container away from heat and light.

Culinary uses

Use English thyme in soups, chowders, stuffings, sauces, roasted meats, poultry and fish. Add sprigs to bouquet garni or combine the leaves with other herbs for Mediterranean-style seasoning blends. Remove tough stems before serving.
