French Thyme Seeds

Bring the warm, earthy fragrance of French thyme to your herb garden and kitchen. Thymus vulgaris is a compact perennial culinary herb with small gray-green leaves and delicate summer flowers. Grow it near a sunny garden path or in a well-drained container, ready to snip for soups, roasted vegetables and savory dishes.

Plant highlights

  • Perennial culinary herb with aromatic gray-green foliage
  • Classic ingredient in French cooking and bouquet garni
  • Suitable for herb gardens, sunny borders, rock gardens and containers
  • Prefers full sun and well-drained soil

Starting from seed

Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before your expected last frost. Sow the tiny seeds shallowly on fine seed-starting mix and keep the surface gently moist without saturating it. Follow packet instructions for any seed-lot-specific sowing requirements. Provide bright light as seedlings develop.

Transplanting and care

Gradually acclimate seedlings to outdoor conditions before transplanting after frost danger has passed. Choose a sunny site with good drainage. For containers, use a pot with drainage holes and avoid leaving it standing in water.

Water young plants as needed while they establish. Avoid prolonged wet soil and excessive watering, particularly in cool weather. Trim lightly to encourage a compact shape, avoiding heavy cuts into older woody stems. Winter survival depends on your climate and drainage.

Harvesting

Once plants are established and growing well, snip small sprigs as needed, leaving enough foliage for continued growth. Use fresh leaves or dry harvested sprigs in a well-ventilated place before storing the leaves in an airtight container.

Culinary uses

Add thyme to soups, chowders, sauces, roasted meats, poultry, fish and vinaigrettes. Combine sprigs with other herbs for bouquet garni, or season roasted potatoes and vegetables with the leaves. Remove tough stems before serving.
