Darwin Hybrid Tulips are the undisputed champions of the tulip world — the tallest, largest-blooming, and most landscape-worthy class of tulip available. The ‘World’s Favorite’ mix delivers a stunning medley of bold colors on towering stems, producing giant egg-shaped blooms up to 6" across that stop traffic in gardens, parks, and public landscapes worldwide. A cross between Single Late and Fosteriana (Emperor) tulips, Darwin Hybrids inherit the best of both parents: extraordinary size and strength from the Emperor side, and reliable flowering and color intensity from the Single Late side. Plant in fall for a spectacular mid-to-late spring display.
Why Darwin Hybrid Tulips?
- Largest blooms of any tulip class — giant egg-shaped flowers up to 6" wide in bold, vivid colors
- Tallest tulip class — strong, upright stems reaching 22–24" tall; exceptional as cut flowers
- Weather tolerant — sturdy stems withstand wind and spring rain better than any other tulip class
- Heat tolerant blooms — flowers hold longer in warmer spring temperatures than most tulips
- Best for perennialization — along with Fosteriana, Greigii, Kaufmanniana, and Species tulips, Darwin Hybrids offer the best odds of returning and blooming year after year
- Resistant to deer, rabbits, and rodents — a significant advantage in garden landscapes
- Sun and partial shade — adapts well to a range of light conditions
- Top landscape choice — the standard for parks, public spaces, and Southern US landscapes
Planting Guide
- Planting time: Fall — plant 6–8 weeks before the ground freezes (typically October–November depending on your zone)
- Hardiness zones: Zones 3–7a as reliable perennials. Zones 7b–10: pre-cool bulbs in the refrigerator for 8–10 weeks at 40–45°F before planting (keep away from fruit, especially apples)
- Light: Full sun to partial shade
- Depth: Plant bulbs 6–8" deep, pointed end up
- Spacing: 4–6" apart for dense planting; 6–8" for naturalized landscape use
- Soil: Well-draining soil is essential — tulip bulbs will rot in waterlogged conditions. Amend heavy clay soils with grit or coarse sand before planting.
- Bloom time: Mid to late spring
- Height: 22–24" tall
After Blooming — Care & Storage
- Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering — do not cut leaves while still green. The leaves photosynthesize energy back into the bulb for next year’s bloom.
- Once leaves have yellowed and browned completely, bulbs can be lifted, dried, cleaned, and stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated location until fall replanting.
- Rotate planting locations — avoid growing tulips in the same soil for consecutive years to reduce disease buildup. Refresh with new soil every other season.
Cut Flower Tips
- Cut stems when buds are still closed but showing full color for maximum vase life.
- Cut at an angle and place immediately in cool water. Change water every 1–2 days.
- Darwin Hybrid stems continue to grow after cutting — allow for this when arranging.
