The Organic American Flag Leek HEIRLOOM Seeds resemble scallions with green and white foliage, and boast an onion-like taste. With a 120-day growth cycle, Europeans have long enjoyed the delectable flavor of leeks, and now this onion cousin is gaining recognition among gourmets and chefs in the U.S.

Leeks Seed, American Flag, have sturdy stems that are thick and closely packed together, with the distinct feature of not forming bulbs like onions. They have a rich history, originally believed to have originated in the Middle East and Mediterranean regions, and are now cultivated in various areas of Asia, including China and Japan. These elongated vegetables are highly valued for their subtle onion flavor and delicate sweetness, making them a staple in Asian cooking for their crunchy texture and mild taste similar to onions.

When to sow outside: 2 to 4 weeks before average last frost for late summer harvest, late spring for fall harvest, and in mild winter climates late summer for the following spring harvest.
When to start inside: RECOMMENDED. 8 to 10 weeks before average last frost.
Harvesting: Harvest leeks when tops are 8" - 12" tall, shanks are about 1" in diameter, and the base is not yet bulbous. Use a garden fork to gently loosen soil, then pull them up by hand. Leeks tolerate cold temperatures as low as 25°F, and can be harvested even after a few light frosts.
