Cosmos Bipinnatus Daydream
Cosmos (Cosmos Bipinnatus Sensation Day Dream) - No summer garden should be without Cosmos blooms nodding in the breeze! Easily established from Cosmos seeds, these annuals are large branching plants with deep green fern-like leaves. Cosmos Bipinnatus Day Dream is a newer hybrid which added a darker rose pink flare at the bottom of each petal and pink veins. The effect is shear beauty! Like all the other types of Cosmos flowers, it is a snap to grow from flower seed. Soon you will have bees and butterflies joyfully visiting the blooms!
Originally, Cosmos came from wildflowers, of course, and are native to our own southwest and more commonly, Mexico. The flowers are often called Mexican Aster. Cosmos do well in hot, desert type areas, but they easily adapt to many conditions and thrive. They will provide the best blooms with moderate amounts of water. Do not over fertilize Cosmos plants as this will decrease the amount of blooms. They will self-sow their own Cosmos flower seeds for a new display next season.
Directly sow Cosmos Bipinnatus seeds into prepared seed beds after danger of frost has passed. Sow the Cosmos flower seeds in rows, 18 inches apart. Sow 6 seeds per foot. Lightly cover Cosmos seeds with 1/16 inch of soil. Keep flower seeds moist. Thin to strongest plant 12 inches apart. Or, if you're not into measurements, Cosmos flower seeds can be scattered onto the prepared soil. Lightly rake the soil over the Cosmos seeds at a depth of 1/16 inch. Keep the Cosmos flower seed moist until germination.
