Monarda citriodora is a non-GMO, heirloom herb garden seed that can be used as an annual. It is a member of the mint family and possesses warm, perennial characteristics. With a pleasant aroma of lemon and peppermint, Lemon Mint also yields light-purple flowers that are perfect for creating potpourri or steeping as a herbal tea. The leaves are also renowned for their soothing abilities, commonly utilized for relieving headaches and bee stings.
Growing Habits
Lemon Mint plants are warm perennials that can grow up to 24-36". Their slender green leaves provide a bright aroma similar to peppermint. As the plant quickly develops, it will produce light-purple flowers and a lemon scent with a mild spice. Tea Benefits of Lemon Mint
As a family member of mint, Lemon Mint features slender green leaves and light-purple flowers that emit fragrant lemon and mint flavors, making it perfect for a refreshing iced herbal tea or steeped as a flowering tea. This herb also has spice properties, akin to peppermint, which can help soothe sore throats and relieve headaches. Known also as "Lemon Beebalm," this variety of herb is traditionally used to treat bee stings.
Growing Lemon Mint
With the arrival of spring, Lemon Mint is an ideal herb to cultivate in your garden for creating fresh or dried potpourri. This perennial produces fragrant mint, spicy, and lemon aromas, perfect for aromatherapy and improving concentration. Use Lemon Mint in sachets to refresh your home, or dry it in a mason jar with other herbs and oils for three days.
Sowing: Sow directly in early spring, placing the seeds on the soil surface as they require light for sprouting. Keep the soil evenly moist until germination, typically within 10-20 days in temperatures of 60-70 degrees F. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, thin or transplant to provide adequate spacing. For an early start, begin the seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost and then transfer them outdoors.
Growing: It is important to properly water seedlings until they become established, but be careful not to overwater. Once fully grown, these plants are resilient to drought, but can benefit from occasional watering in very dry weather. In optimal growing environments, the plants will self-seed and are highly attractive to both bees and hummingbirds. They are generally not preferred by deer.
Harvesting: This plant offers versatility for fresh and dried floral arrangements. For optimal freshness, choose stems with newly bloomed flowers and remove any foliage that could become submerged in water before arranging in a vase.
