Gayfeather Wild Flower Seed
Gayfeather (Liatris Spicata) - Grows easily and reliably , Liatris or commonly called Gayfeather, has dense violet-lavender to rosy purple flower heads, which provide striking vertical form in the perennial wild flower garden. They perform well in average well-drained soils and full sun, yet they also tolerates poor soils and drought. Unbranched stalks bear dense spikes of lavender to purple flowers in July and August on strong stems. The nectar-rich flowers are a favorite with butterflies and hummingbirds. Songbirds love the wildflower seed. Liatris Spicata is also known by the common name of Blazing Star.
Gayfeather plants are great in perennial borders, cutting gardens, native plant gardens, butterfly gardens, naturalized areas, prairies or meadows. Interestingly, it flowers from the top down! Prune back any remaining stems from the previous year in early spring. During the growing season you may also apply a light application of organic low nitrogen fertilizer on top of the soil. During times of drought, make sure you water Liatris Blazing Star weekly until the soil is completely moist.

Cover the bed with a 2-inch layer of aged compost. Incorporate the compost into the top 8 to 10 inches of the bed by turning it in with a shovel. Remove any weeds and weed roots uncovered during amendment so they don't later invade the bed.

Dig a 5-inch-deep hole for each blazing star corm, setting the holes approximately four inches apart in every direction. Set the corms in the holes with the flat sides on the bottom. Fill the holes back in with soil and firm the soil surface lightly.

Water the bed until the top 6 inches of soil feel moist. Cover the soil with 2 inches of mulch to further help retain soil moisture and prevent weeds.
Water blazing star flowers when the soil surface begins to feel dry, providing 1 to 2 inches of water per week. Blazing stars require soil that remains evenly moist to at least a 6 inches deep at all times.
