The California Wonder pepper is a well-liked vegetable for home gardening as it offers a mild, pleasing taste. Its glossy, deep-green bells reach about 4" in size and turn red when fully mature, typically in 75 days. This variety thrives on tall, upright ever-bearing plants that reach 24" and are resistant to Tobacco Mosaic Virus.
This particular type of pepper, the Red Cal Wonder, is scientifically known as Capsicum annuum and falls under the categories of Heirloom and/or OP (Open Pollinated.) and Organically Grown Organic. It is widely considered to be the top choice among bell peppers in America, with its sweet, blocky shape, 4 lobes, thick flesh, and nearly 4" diameter. This variety is a tender annual.

Provide warmth for germination, such as a heating mat or warm surface like a fridge. Plan and start early.

Sow seeds indoors ¼" deep. Peppers germinate best in warm soil, so gentle bottom heat may be helpful until seedlings emerge. Wait to transplant outdoors until soil is warm .Pepper seeds come from tropical, humid regions and require proper temperature, moisture, and air circulation for optimal growth. Avoid using jiffy peat pots, plugs, or potting soil as they can cause problems with moisture levels and lead to disease and fungus. Organic Seed Starting Material is recommended for optimal germination results..
Sowing: Start California Wonder pepper seeds indoors in peat pots about 8 weeks before the last expected spring frost. Plant pepper seeds 1/4" deep and keep the soil at 80-85 degrees F until germination; provide sunlight or a grow light for 12-16 hours a day. When the outdoor temperature reaches 60-65 degrees F during the day and no less than 50 degrees F at night, transplant the seedlings 12-16" apart. Exposing the plants to the weather for several hours a day before transplanting may help prevent shock. Peppers also grow well in containers or raised beds.
Growing: Keep the soil evenly moist and weeds under control; mulching the plants may help with this. If excess heat and sun cause the plants to wilt, provide shade. California Wonder pepper seeds for planting adapt to many soil types and are resistant to tobacco mosaic virus.
Harvesting: Harvesting sweet peppers is basically a matter of personal preference regarding color and sweetness. Generally, the longer the peppers mature on the vine, the sweeter they will taste. Mature peppers, however, signal the plant to stop producing; if the peppers are picked when still at the green stage, the plant will go on producing. Always use a knife or scissors to remove peppers to prevent damage to the fragile stems.
