Kniphofia Red Hot Poker r has striking spikes of flowers that change color from top to bottom beginning with red buds opening to orange flowers then fading to yellow. A favorite of hummingbirds and butterflies alike. Easy to grow and a great perennial for beginner gardeners! (Kniphofia)

Red Hot Poker is the nickname for these bold, handsome natives of Madagascar and tropical South Africa. Kniphofia is also commonly called torch lily. It is a rugged, interesting perennial of the lily family. From a basal tuft of 18”sword-shaped, bluish-green linear leaves rises a succession of thick scapes featuring dense, 6-10 long tubular flowers. Flowers emerge in a variety of colors. Each flower head is broad at the top but tapered at the base, thus resembling a torch or poker. Remove the fading flower spikes to encourage additional blooms. It is deer resistant with no significant insect or disease problems, and it is heat and drought tolerant. Red Hot Poker grows in average, organic-rich well-drained soils in full sun in areas protected from the wind. It is not tolerant of wet, heavy soils, particularly in winter. Crowns benefit from winter protection in USDA Hardiness zones 5 - 6. Consider a winter mulch, or tie their leaves together forming a canopy over the crown to prevent water from settling in the crown and freezing. Established clumps are best left undisturbed.

To plant bare root perennials, dig a hole large enough to encompass the roots without bending or circling. Set the plant in place so the crown (part of the plant where the root meets the stem) is about 1-2” below the soil surface. Cover with soil to the original soil surface and water thoroughly.

The order was delivered too early. We still have 3 feet of snow and ice in Wyoming. I hope the plants survive until the spring thaw!
