Rock Thyme - (Acinos alpinus) Closely related to Thyme, this plant has dense, cushiony mats of wide spreading, deep evergreen foliage made of masses of tiny green leaves. The compact, low growing mounds sport clusters of very attractive, dainty bright pink to purple flowers which bloom June to October. The petite round leaves remain green all summer. Beautiful, edible, hardy ground-cover that's seldom seen, but easy-to-grow perennial that does well in poor soils. Also known as Alpine Calamint.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Dense, cushiony mats of wide spreading, and deep evergreen foliage sport violet flowers with red and white markings that bloom June to Oct. Leaves are succulent in cooked dishes, also make a delicious tea. Beautiful, edible, hardy groundcover that's a seldom seen but easy-to-grow perennial that does well in poor soils.
Description:
This alpine plant is perfect for rock or alpine gardens and particularly hot spots in the garden; attractive, dainty little flowers on a mat of foliage; attracts pollinators to the garden.
Ornamental Features:
Rock Thyme features dainty violet tubular flowers at the ends of the stems from mid to late summer. It's tiny round leaves remain green in color throughout the season. The fruit is not ornamentally significant.

Rock Thyme is an herbaceous perennial with a ground-hugging habit of growth. Its relatively fine texture sets it apart from other garden plants with less refined foliage.

Plant Characteristics:
Rock Thyme will grow to be about 12 inches tall at maturity, with a spread of 10 inches. Its foliage tends to remain dense right to the ground, not requiring facer plants in front. It grows at a medium rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 10 years.
This perennial should only be grown in full sunlight. It prefers dry to average moisture levels with very well-drained soil, and will often die in standing water. It is considered to be drought-tolerant, and thus makes an ideal choice for a low-water garden or xeriscape application. It is not particular as to soil pH, but grows best in poor soils. It is somewhat tolerant of urban pollution. This plant can be propagated by division.
