Viroflay Spinach Spinacia oleracea. Also known as Monstrueux, Monstrueux de Viroflay. Annual. 45 days to maturity. 2,400 seeds per oz. 12-24" height. 2-3" spacing. Produces very large, thick dark green leaves.
Orig. from France, Monstrueux de Viroflay Spinach is an heirloom annual with large, sweet, & complex dark-green savoyed leaves. 2ft wide, it's one of the earliest & sturdiest varieties. Leaves stay flavorful & tender at larger sizes. Additionally, the savoyed leaves are highly resistant to cold weather, making them an ideal choice for winter gardening.
28-50 days. Also known as simply, "Viroflay", the huge, deep green, tender leaves are a spinach lovers gourmet delight!
Give it a bit more room in your plot; the plant can get up to 24" wide, and with 10" long, tender leaves, spinach production is a snap! Extremely vigorous, and particularly good for fall plantings. Use the thinned out seedlings fresh in salads.
Seed emergence typically occurs within 5-10 days, with a recommended seed depth of 1/2 inch and spacing of 3 seeds per 12-18 inches. Rows should be spaced 1 foot apart, and thinning is recommended when plants reach a height of 4-6 inches, with a final spacing of 1 plant per 12-18 inches.
When to sow outside: RECOMMENDED. 4 to 6 weeks before average last frost, or as soon as the soil can be worked. Successive sowings thereafter every 3 weeks until 4 weeks before the first fall frost. If mulched, spinach can overwinter in sub-zero temperatures.
When to start inside: Not recommended.
Harvesting: Pick individual leaves from outer edges of plant as they become big enough to use, or cut the whole plant 1" above the ground, and new leaves will be produced. Harvest before the plant sends up a flower stalk.
Yield: High.
Sowing: Plant Spinach - Monstrueux de Viroflay in cool weather with 1/2" deep and 2" apart spacing in rows 12-18" apart. Thin seedlings to 4-8" apart. Spinach can survive sub-zero temperatures and loves shade. For continuous crop, plant every 10 days until summer heat starts. Spinach seeds go dormant above 80-85 degrees F.
Growing: To prevent root disturbance, use mulch and keep the soil moist but not too wet. Shade may be needed if temperatures exceed 80 degrees F to avoid bolting.
Harvesting: -Harvest spinach leaves when large enough and pick outer leaves if harvesting individually. Cut entire plant at ground level if harvesting whole plant; new leaves will grow. If plant bolts and produces flower stalk, leaves will have stronger flavor but still usable.
