Yarrow White (Achillea Millefolium) - This resilient plant thrives in all areas of the United States. Easily grown from seeds, it also spreads through underground roots. Perfect for flower gardens or natural environments, Wild Yarrow adds beauty to meadows, with caution needed to prevent it from overwhelming other wildflowers.. Yarrow has attractive, fragrant, finely divided fern-like leaves and large flat-topped dusty white flower clusters. The Yarrow herb plant was also widely used as a medicinal herb.

White Yarrow seeds are commonly cultivated for their wound-healing properties and were historically used on battlefields to treat injured soldiers. To prevent its invasive nature, it is recommended to use a barrier or container. Planting them in full sun will attract butterflies and beneficial insects while also repelling deer and rabbits. Consider using Yarrow as a companion plant to other herbs.

These seeds can tolerate hot and humid summers and are also adaptable to poor soil conditions. For optimal growth, plant them in lean, well-drained soil. Be cautious of heavy clays and moist, fertile soils. Prune faded flowers to promote new growth and divide the plants every 2-3 years.

Sowing: Direct sow white yarrow seeds in fall or early spring; fall planted seed will remain dormant until spring. To start Achillea Millefolium seeds indoors, plant them just below the surface of the soil since they need light to germinate. Keep the soil temperature at 65-75 degrees F, but out of the hottest rays of sunlight.

Growing: To ensure strong root growth, be cautious not to overwater mature plants and consider staking in fertile soil or shady conditions to prevent plants from falling over. Deadhead wilted blossoms for continued bloom and divide the plant in early spring or fall after 3-4 years for optimal growth.

Harvesting: Gather leaves and flowers as soon as they mature. Harvest the whole stem as soon as it begins to bloom; bundle the stems and hang them upside down to dry away from direct sunlight. Yarrow blossoms make good cut flowers, and when dried they hold their color well. Keep in mind that if the flowers have been open for more than a day, they will go to seed as they dry. Individual blossoms or leaves can also be harvested and spread out to dry in a protected location.
