How to growing onion from seed to sets

Onions are grown from onion sets, which can be grown from seed, but it is often easier to grow the onions from the sets themselves. Onion sets are small, dry onion bulbs that were grown in the previous season and not allowed to mature. When they are planted the following season, they produce an early onion crop in regions with long-growing seasons, so they are highly convenient for gardeners. Since onion seeds germination rates are poor, gardeners often opt for growing onions from sets.

how to grow onion seeds

Plant onion seeds when soil is at least 45 degrees. Sow seeds thickly spaced 1/2 inch apart and 1/4 inch deep.

Onion sets thrive in full sun, debris-free, compost-rich soil. Avoid thinning seedlings, choose the right variety for your region, and keep the bed evenly moist.

Harvest the bulbs. Store sets between 1 inch and 1/2 inch diameter, cure in sun for 10 days, remove tops, store in mesh bags in cool, dry place labeled for spring planting.
