Cheiro do Norte — Portuguese for “scent of the North” — is a stunning Brazilian Capsicum chinense prized for its exceptional fragrance and complex flavor. The beautiful peach and cream-colored pods deliver a light habanero-like heat layered with sweet, fruity aromatics. It’s as much about the aroma as the flavor, making it a standout in Caribbean and South American cooking.

Variety Details

  • Species: Capsicum chinense
  • Origin: Brazil
  • Pod Color: Peach to cream at maturity
  • Flavor: Sweet, fruity, light habanero heat
  • Heat Level: Mild-medium

Starting Seeds

  • Sow ¼ inch deep indoors 8–10 weeks before last frost
  • Germination temperature: 80–85°F — use a heat mat for best results
  • Germination time: 1–4 weeks (chinense varieties can be slow — be patient)
  • Soak seeds in room-temperature water for up to 24 hours before sowing to improve germination speed
  • Use organic seed-starting mix; avoid peat pots or standard potting soil
  • Transplant outdoors after last frost when soil is consistently warm (above 60°F)

Growing Tips

  • Full sun, fertile well-drained soil
  • Water 1 inch per week; use soaker hoses during hot spells
  • Mulch around base with 1–2 inches of compost
  • Add compost to planting hole; feed with slow-release fertilizer at transplant
  • Grows well in 5-gallon containers for patio or indoor growing
  • Harden off seedlings over 7–14 days before moving outdoors permanently

Harvest

Pick pods when fully colored (peach/cream). Regular harvesting encourages continued fruiting throughout the season.
