Oenothera speciosa — Showy Evening Primrose, also known as Mexican Primrose or Pink Evening Primrose — is a vigorous, spreading perennial wildflower that produces dozens of large, silky, saucer-shaped 2½-inch blooms in soft pink with yellow centers, opening both day and night throughout late spring and summer. A rhizomatous spreader that forms breathtaking colonies in naturalized settings, roadsides, and large borders — it is equally beautiful at the front of a sunny border or in a large container where it can be contained. Drought tolerant and deer resistant once established.

Approx. 200,000 seeds per oz.

Growing Guide

Direct sowing: Sow in early spring or late fall. Prepare weed-free soil and loosen the top 1–2 inches. Spread seeds and rake lightly into the soil, pressing for good soil contact — do not cover; seeds need light to germinate. Keep moist until germination (20–45 days at 65–70°F). Thin seedlings to 12–18 inches apart.

Site & soil: Full sun to partial shade; well-drained soil, pH 5.8–6.8. Tolerates dry, rocky, and poor soils. Not suited to consistently wet or waterlogged sites.

Note on spread: This species spreads by rhizomes and can form large colonies. Plant where naturalized spreading is welcome, or grow in containers to manage spread.
