Antirrhinum majus 'Montego Rose' is a compact, high-performance dwarf snapdragon from the acclaimed Montego Series — bred specifically for exceptional outdoor garden performance during hot weather conditions, which is a notable strength for a snapdragon. Plants reach just 8–10 inches tall with a 6–8 inch spread, base-branch heavily, and flower 5–7 days earlier than other dwarf snaps in the same class. Rose-toned blooms appear in abundance and continue through the heat of summer when most bedding snaps falter — with a strong second flush as days shorten and temperatures cool in fall. Light frost tolerant and deer resistant.
Plant Highlights
- Compact dwarf habit: 8–10 inches tall, 6–8 inches wide — ideal for beds, borders, and containers
- Flowers 5–7 days earlier than comparable dwarf varieties
- Outstanding hot-weather performance — one of the best bedding snaps for summer
- Heavy base branching for dense, full plants
- Strong second flush as weather cools in fall
- Light frost tolerant; deer resistant
Growing Guide
Starting indoors: Sow 6–8 weeks before transplanting outdoors. Surface-sow on pre-moistened quality starter mix and press seeds in gently — do not cover; seeds need light to germinate. Keep at 64–72°F; germination in 10–21 days. Harden off seedlings for 10–14 days before planting out. Pinch back at transplant time to encourage branching.
Mild-winter areas: Sow outdoors in a sheltered seedbed in late summer for winter and spring blooms.
Site & soil: Full sun; rich, moist, well-drained soil (pH 6.0–7.3). Space 8 inches apart. Incorporate organic matter at planting for best results.
Ongoing care: Deadhead spent flowers regularly to encourage continued blooming through summer. Blossom production picks back up naturally as days shorten and temperatures cool in fall.
