Viola cornuta 'King Henry' is a regal, richly colored viola with deep velvety purple blooms, a golden eye, and charming whisker markings — every inch deserving of its royal name. These gorgeous violas look stunning paired with spring daffodils or used as underplantings for roses and shrubs. Fill containers, window boxes, and borders for a sweeping display of cool-season color. Hardy to USDA Zone 4 in mild winters; in warmer zones (6+) they may bloom continuously through winter. Violas are rewarding and easy to grow, tolerating most soils and returning reliably in cool weather.

Growing Guide

Starting indoors: Sow in late winter for early spring transplants; or in summer for fall planting in Zones 6 and above. Viola seeds need light to germinate — cover thinly with no more than the thickness of the seed itself.

Direct sowing: Sow outdoors in early spring or late summer. Keep seeds moist until germination (14–21 days at 68°F).

Site and soil: Full sun to partial shade; well-drained soil, pH 5.8–6.8. Space 8 inches apart. Plants thrive in cool temperatures and will fade in summer heat — trim back to encourage fall rebloom.
