Size: 30 seeds

Add striking texture to a perennial border with wormwood. Artemisia absinthium forms a bushy plant of finely divided, aromatic silver-gray leaves, followed by small yellow flowers in midsummer. Its distinctive foliage makes a natural focal point in herb and cottage gardens.

At a glance

  • Botanical name: Artemisia absinthium
  • Growth habit: Hardy perennial
  • Height: About 24–36 inches
  • USDA hardiness zones: 3–8
  • Light: Full sun to partial shade
  • Soil: Lean, well-drained soil
  • Flowers: Small yellow blooms in midsummer

Start wormwood seeds

Start seeds indoors 10–12 weeks before transplanting outdoors. Press seeds lightly onto moist seed-starting mix without covering them, as light helps them germinate. Keep the surface gently moist in a bright location. Harden seedlings off over 10–14 days before transplanting, spacing plants 18–24 inches apart.

Choose the right spot

Plant in full sun or partial shade in lean, sandy or loamy soil that drains well. Wormwood tolerates dry conditions once established, but does not like waterlogged ground. Because the plant may inhibit the growth of some nearby plants, place it at a border or give it its own space rather than mixing it closely with vegetables and herbs.

Care and harvest

Cut plants back in early spring to encourage fresh growth. If harvesting for dried arrangements, cut stems in midsummer when the plant is flowering and hang small bundles in a dark, well-ventilated place. Store dried stems or leaves in a cool, dry location.

A note on traditional use

Wormwood is known as a traditional botanical associated with absinthe and other bitter spirits. This listing is for seeds to grow the plant and does not make medicinal or health claims. Seek qualified guidance before using any part of a plant internally.
