Enjoy crisp, flavorful green beans from compact plants with Contender bush bean seeds. This early snap bean produces round to oval green pods that cook up tender when picked young. Its bush habit makes it a practical choice for vegetable beds where you want beans without a climbing trellis.

When and How to Plant

Direct sow after frost danger has passed and the soil has warmed to approximately 65–75°F. Choose full sun and loose, fertile, well-drained soil. Sow approximately 1 inch deep, spacing seeds 4–6 inches apart in rows 18–24 inches apart.

The supplied directions estimate germination in approximately 7–14 days with warm soil around 70–80°F. Keep the seedbed evenly moist without waterlogging it.

Growing and Care

Water consistently, especially during flowering and pod development. Avoid handling plants when foliage is wet, and rotate the planting area between seasons to help manage disease pressure. Feed according to soil needs and fertilizer directions.

Bush beans commonly produce a concentrated flush of pods rather than one single picking. Small successive sowings approximately 10–14 days apart can extend the harvest while weather remains suitable.

Harvesting

Pick pods while they are smooth, firm, and tender, before the seeds inside become noticeably swollen. Check plants frequently and harvest gently to avoid damaging stems. Harvest timing varies with weather and growing conditions; use pod tenderness rather than a guaranteed day count as your guide.

Kitchen Use and Storage

Wash harvested pods and cook before eating. Enjoy steamed, sautéed, or added to soups and stews. Refrigerate fresh beans and use promptly for best quality. Follow a tested food-preservation recipe when canning or freezing. Do not eat the planting seeds supplied in the packet.
