How to Prepare

Steep the dried sorrel in freshly boiled water, then strain thoroughly. Adjust the amount of sorrel and steeping time to suit your preferred strength. Sweeten to taste and enjoy hot, or chill for a refreshing drink.

Caribbean Sorrel Punch Inspiration

Combine dried sorrel with fresh ginger and boiling water. Add allspice berries or a cinnamon stick if desired. Strain, sweeten to taste, and refrigerate promptly once cooled. Serve chilled, with a squeeze of lime or sparkling water for a bright finish.

A Familiar Flavor Across Cultures

Jamaican sorrel is a traditional Christmas drink ingredient in Jamaica and other Caribbean islands. Hibiscus drinks are also known as agua de jamaica in Latin America, bissap in parts of West Africa, and zobo in Nigeria. This is hibiscus sorrel, not the leafy garden sorrel of the Rumex genus.

Storage

Keep tightly sealed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Use a clean, dry utensil when portioning.
