Planting your seeds

Direct sow in early spring while conditions are cool, approximately 4–6 weeks before your area's last expected frost, when the soil can be worked. A fall crop is also an option where your climate allows enough cool growing time. Choose well-draining soil and sow approximately 1 inch deep, spacing seeds 2–4 inches apart.

Support and care

Install a trellis or pea netting at planting so the developing vines have something to climb. Leave enough space between rows to reach the plants for harvesting. Keep soil consistently moist without waterlogging. Peas perform best in cool conditions; hot summer weather can shorten the harvest season.

Harvest for tender pods

Pick pods while they remain flat, before the peas inside swell. Check plants frequently and harvest gently to avoid damaging the vines. Regular picking helps you catch the pods at their most tender stage.

From garden to kitchen

Wash harvested pods before preparing them. Enjoy the young whole pods in garlic-and-ginger stir-fries, lightly steamed side dishes, or fresh salads. Trim the ends and remove any strings if present.
