Starting Strawberry Seeds

Use a clean seed tray with drainage holes and a fine seed-starting mix. Moisten the mix before sowing. Scatter the tiny seeds over the surface and press them gently into contact with the mix, avoiding deep burial.

Keep the growing medium consistently moist but not saturated. Provide bright light and protect trays from intense direct sun that can overheat them or dry out the surface. Germination can be uneven, so continue monitoring moisture and allow time for seedlings to emerge.

Transplanting and Growing

Once seedlings have several true leaves and are large enough to handle, move them carefully into individual pots. Gradually acclimate them to outdoor conditions before planting out when weather is suitable.

Choose a sunny site with well-drained soil enriched with compost. Keep the crown at soil level when transplanting, water gently, and maintain even moisture as plants establish. Containers should have drainage holes.

Establishment and Harvest

Seed-grown strawberries need time to develop before producing a useful harvest. Fruiting may be limited during establishment, and timing varies with sowing date, climate, and care. Removing early flowers can direct energy toward plant growth, though it postpones fruiting.

Harvest berries when fully ripe and enjoy them fresh or add them to desserts and preserves. Plant longevity and yield depend on growing conditions; no fixed harvest quantity or fruiting date is guaranteed.
