When to Plant
Plant in fall once the soil has cooled and before the ground freezes. Tulips need a cold period to flower well. In mild-winter climates, confirm local pre-chilling recommendations before planting; planting deeper is not a substitute for adequate chilling.
Planting Guide
- Choose full sun or a lightly shaded location with well-drained soil.
- Loosen the planting bed and improve drainage where needed.
- Plant with the pointed end upward, following the depth instructions supplied with your bulbs; a common guide is a planting depth approximately 2–3 times the bulb's height.
- Space bulbs approximately 6 inches apart, arranging them in groups for a fuller display.
- Water after planting and avoid sites where water collects.
Container Growing
Use a container with drainage holes and a free-draining potting mix. Allow enough soil depth for the bulbs and developing roots. Keep the mix from becoming waterlogged and provide the appropriate winter chilling conditions for your climate.
Care After Flowering
Remove faded flower heads, but leave the foliage until it yellows naturally so the bulbs can replenish their reserves. Repeat flowering varies with climate and growing conditions; Ballade should not be treated as a guaranteed naturalizing tulip.
Garden Protection and Safety
Tulips can be eaten by deer, rabbits, and rodents, so protect bulbs and emerging growth where these animals are active. Tulip bulbs are ornamental, not edible. Keep them away from children and pets.
