Warm Salmon-Pink Color for Spring Borders

Salmon Van Eijk tulips bring a warm glow to the spring garden with large salmon-pink flowers on sturdy stems. This Darwin Hybrid is a lovely choice for grouped plantings, mixed borders, and cutting gardens where its softly colored blooms can take center stage.

Plant a cluster beside white or cream spring flowers for a gentle contrast, then bring a few stems indoors to enjoy their luminous color in a simple vase.

Fall Planting Guide

Plant in fall for flowers the following spring. Wait until the soil has cooled, but plant before the ground freezes so bulbs have time to establish roots. Use local soil and weather conditions rather than a fixed calendar date.

  • Before planting: Keep unplanted bulbs in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place away from direct sunlight. Do not leave them in sealed, damp packaging.
  • Choose a site: Select a full-sun location with freely draining soil. Avoid low areas where rainwater collects.
  • Prepare the soil: Remove weeds and loosen the planting area. Work in well-rotted compost where needed; do not place fresh manure against bulbs.
  • Planting depth: Set bulbs pointed end up, with the base approximately 6–8 inches below the soil surface.
  • Spacing: Leave approximately 4–6 inches between bulbs. Plant in clusters for a fuller spring display.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. During fall, water again only as needed when soil is dry; avoid keeping the bed soggy.
  • Containers: Use a deep pot with drainage holes and well-draining potting mix. Protect pots from prolonged waterlogging and severe freezing conditions.

Fall Planting in Warm-Winter Climates

Tulips need a sustained cold period to develop flowers. Where winters are mild, bulbs may need pre-chilling before planting during the coolest part of the season. Confirm the chilling duration and planting window with your local extension service or bulb supplier. Deeper planting does not replace winter chilling.

Growing and Aftercare

  • Water as needed during active growth, keeping soil from remaining persistently soggy.
  • Remove spent flowers after blooming, but leave the foliage in place.
  • Allow leaves to yellow naturally before removing them.
  • Avoid excessive watering while bulbs are dormant.
  • Protect emerging shoots and flowers from browsing deer and rabbits where needed.

Darwin Hybrid tulips can bloom again in suitable conditions, but repeat flowering depends on climate and care and is not guaranteed.

Important Safety Note

Ornamental tulip bulbs are not for eating. Keep bulbs away from children and pets.
