Spring Flowers and Tart Red Fruit

Nanking cherry (Prunus tomentosa), also called Manchu or downy cherry, is a deciduous fruiting shrub with pale pink-to-white spring flowers and small, juicy red cherries. Its branching habit suits informal hedges, wildlife gardens, and edible landscapes.

Plant where you can enjoy the spring blossom and watch the developing fruit. Birds may share your interest in the crop, so plan protection if you want to reserve fruit for the kitchen. Fruiting depends on pollination, weather, establishment, and ongoing care.

What You Receive

  • Product: Live bare-root Nanking cherry shrubs, not potted plants or harvested cherries.
  • Pack options: Choose 1 or 3 plants.
  • Supplied size: Approximately 12–18 inches.
  • Botanical name: Prunus tomentosa.
  • Mature height: Approximately 6–10 feet, with a broad, spreading habit.
  • Flowers: Pale pink fading to white in spring.
  • Fruit: Small red cherries with a tart flavor.

Bare-root plants may arrive without leaves according to season. Young shrubs need time to establish; immediate flowering or fruiting is not guaranteed.

Pollination and Garden Planning

For reliable fruit production, plan for cross-pollination with a second genetically distinct Nanking cherry nearby. A single plant may not provide a dependable crop. A multiple-plant pack does not by itself verify that the plants are genetically distinct; confirm stock suitability if planting primarily for fruit.

Choose full sun for best flowering and fruiting, or partial shade where appropriate. Allow approximately 4–5 feet between plants for an informal hedge and more room for shrubs grown as individual specimens. Consider the mature spread before planting near paths or structures.

Arrival Care and Planting

  • Unpack promptly and inspect the roots.
  • Keep roots moist and protected from drying wind and direct sun until planting.
  • Choose well-drained soil; avoid sites that remain saturated.
  • Dig a hole wide enough to spread the roots naturally without bending or circling.
  • Set at the original nursery soil line, with the root flare at soil level rather than burying the stem deeply.
  • Backfill gently, water thoroughly, and mulch around the root area while keeping mulch away from the stems.

Establishment and Ongoing Care

Maintain even soil moisture during establishment. Once established, check moisture during extended dry periods and water as needed. Fertilize according to soil-test results and local fruit-growing recommendations.

Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches with clean tools. Plan additional pruning with local guidance, recognizing that removing flowering wood can reduce the crop. Protect young stems from rabbit and other animal browsing. Monitor for pests and disease rather than assuming the shrub is trouble-free.

Harvest and Food Safety

Harvest ripe red fruit and wash thoroughly before use. Enjoy the flesh fresh or use it for jams, jellies, and cooked preparations. Remove pits before cooking or serving, especially to children.

Do not eat pits or seed kernels, leaves, or stems. Keep these plant parts away from children and pets. Use only correctly identified, ripe fruit flesh and follow tested recipes for preserving.
